Go Green SG is a nationwide movement spearheaded by the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment. The event spans from June 12th to July 14th, featuring various sustainability-related activities.
Highlights of Go Green SG 2024 Launch
The launch event was held at The Republic Culture Centre (TRCC) at RP on June 12th, 2024. Prominent figures, including Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat, Dr. Amy Khor, SPS Baey Yam Keng, Annette Lee, and Glenn Yong, along with several sustainability advocates like Biogirl MJ and the founder of VintageWknd, graced the occasion.
Several impactful videos were showcased during the opening. A short film featuring characters Andy and Rishi illustrated the importance of public hygiene, demonstrating how Andy’s nagging about hygiene practices ultimately saved him in a miniature world of trash and germs.
Following this, The Go Green RP Video highlighted RP’s sustainability initiatives, noting that 20% of the institution’s energy is saved through solar plans and that sustainability is a key part of the curriculum for all students. Additionally, Annette Lee and Glenn Yong performed a specially composed song for the event, adding a catchy music element to the campaign’s message.
Innovative Projects and Booths
The event also featured various booths where the ministers and visitors could learn about student, community, and industry efforts to tackle sustainability challenges. One notable project presented was the Valorisation of Okara into plant-based cheese and extruded snacks, demonstrating innovative approaches to waste reduction and sustainable food production.
Public Hygiene: A Key Focus
A significant focus of Go Green SG 2024 is the importance of public hygiene. Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat (DPM Heng) emphasised this in his speech at the launch event, stating, “Public hygiene is important for all city dwellers as cities get more and more populated, and denser. It is critical in preventing the spread of viruses and pathogens.” He noted that 94% of Singaporeans are satisfied with public hygiene levels, according to a study by Singapore Management University (SMU).
DPM Heng praised the progress made by the National Environment Agency (NEA) in encouraging diners to return their crockeries and trays, with compliance increasing to 93% from 65% in August 2023. “Good simple habits make Singapore a cleaner and greener environment,” he remarked, citing Japan as a model of cleanliness.

Go Green SG reflects a collective effort involving more than 160 partners organising over 300 activities that engage various sectors of society, from educational institutions to community groups. DPM Heng highlighted, “To have good habits, it is good to start from young,” underscoring the importance of early education in sustainability.
