Republic Polytechnic’s new batch of students had a blast at this year’s Jam and Hop, an annual music and dance event largely regarded as the highlight of the school’s orientation camp.
Freshmen from various schools wowed the audience and judges with lung-busting singing, dazzling dancing and eye-popping acting in two non-stop hours on April 12. They showcased their creativity and incorporation of the event’s “One RP” theme in a bid to impress the judges, who would also look at the results of the orientation programme’s tug-of-war and Principal’s Cup challenges to decide the overall winner.
“All the performances were awesome!” said 18-year-old Chen Xiu Wei, a Year 1 student from the School Of Hospitality. “I could really see the performers’ passion and determination.”
One of the highlights of the event was the performance by acoustic music group Replug IG, who kept the audience’s heads bobbing and feet stamping with their energetic blend of pop hits and beatboxing. Rock band interest group Jammerz Arena was another hot favourite among the crowd, starting their performance with pop-rock songs before their DJs spun and mixed the tunes to a thrilling climax.
Seventeen-year-old Kulvin Kaur, a Year 1 student from the Centre for Enterprise and Communication, said that she thoroughly enjoyed every performance but reserved special praise for the DJs’ music choices. She said: “I thought the DJs did very well. The DJs mixed great music and got the crowd really hyped up!”
As the music died and the party wound down, the freshmen in the audience were left physically drained but excited about the final two days of the orientation programme.
