A Journey of Faith and Self-Discovery
The decision to wear the hijab is deeply personal, shaped by contemplation and self-reflection. For some, it’s a straightforward choice, while for others, it’s a journey of growth. My journey involved navigating changes and sacrifices, such as prioritising modesty over personal freedom. Yet, these changes helped me find my authentic self.
Understanding the Hijab’s Deeper Significance
The hijab represents more than a head covering. Derived from the Arabic term ḥijāb, it encompasses principles of modesty applicable to both men and women, albeit differently. According to Singapore’s Islamic Religious Council (MUIS), covering one’s aurat (parts of the body that should be covered for modesty) preserves religious character, protects honor, and aligns with Islamic teachings in the Qur’an.
For women, this means modest clothing that covers the body, often including the hair, once they reach an age of accountability. This reflects a commitment to faith and self-respect.
Making My Decision
For me, wearing the hijab was about more than tradition or appearance. I wanted to take responsibility for my actions and relieve my parents of the spiritual burden Islam attributes to them before children come of age. This decision came from a place of self-awareness and a desire to align with my faith.
A Statement of Agency
Before donning the hijab, I struggled with self-confidence and discomfort in my clothing. The hijab provided not just a new routine but also a sense of security, empowering me to embrace my identity as a woman and Muslim.
Far from a superficial choice, it helped me reclaim ownership over my body and strengthen my connection to my faith.
Choosing Modesty and Faith
As a Muslim woman, modesty in both actions and attire is part of my spiritual journey. Wearing the hijab is a daily reaffirmation of trust in my beliefs, guiding me to live authentically and with purpose.
It also allows me to see Islam beyond stereotypes, offering clarity and strength in a world where misconceptions abound.
Reflecting on the Journey
Wearing the hijab is not a decision to take lightly. It requires reflection and commitment, as it symbolises more than modesty—it’s a step toward empowerment and spiritual fulfillment.
While it was a challenging transition, I am proud to say the choice was mine. This realisation fuels my ongoing journey of self-discovery and faith.
